Winners of India-UK Cultural Quiz Competition met Prince of Wales, Prince Charles at the British Council. Vignesh Deshpande and Anmol Das, students of Suncity School, Gurugram alongwith their faculty member Soma Dam defeated over 100 contestants from 35 schools to ace the competition. Six schools qualified for the final round in which Suncity School emerged victorious.
“I am indebted to my school for giving me this unique opportunity to meet Prince Charles. Winning the competition came as a pleasant surprise to me. Credit goes to my team for their wonderful support and encouragement,” said Anmol Das, a student of Class IX, Suncity School.
Elated on Anmol’s win, her mother, Jagriti said: “I am proud of my son. I am also glad that his talent is getting recognition.”
“I was filled with awe on meeting Prince Charles. Such opportunity comes once in a lifetime. He even interacted with us and when he came to know that we have won the inter-school India-UK Cultural Quiz Competition, he remarked ‘Oh! You must be really clever.’ He asked us where our school was situated and how far it was from New Delhi. He even admired our school uniform and asked us if we have ever visited the United Kingdom,” said Vighnesh Deshpande, a student of Class XI, Suncity School.
“It was tough to win the competition. Our success was due to combined team efforts,” he added.
“Vighnesh has always been a hard-working and focussed student. At the same time, he is amicable and has the unique ability to bond with everyone. His success is 99% due to teamwork and one percent due to luck. We are also thankful to Suncity School for giving such an opportunity to my son,” said Mr. Vikram Deshpande, Vighnesh’s father, who is a corporate professional.
The school authorities also lauded the students for their efforts. “This is a great achievement, we are proud of Anmol and Vighnesh. We, at Suncity School, have always stressed on holistic development of students. Co-curricular activities hold relevance as they hone key personality traits. I would like to congratulate the team who made the school proud,” said Ms. Rupa Chakravarty, Principal, Suncity School.
Prince Charles was on a two -day visit to India as a part of a 10-day four-nation tour alongwith his wife Camilla Parker Bowles, Duchess of Cornwall. The visit aimed at strengthening bilateral ties between the India and United Kingdom.
Organized by the British Council, India-UK Cultural Quiz witnessed over 100 contestants participating from 35 schools across Delhi-NCR. The quiz tested participants’ knowledge of the history, culture, tradition, the prominent sportspersons and personalities, music, movies, business, brands and the literature of the two countries. The competition was among the plethora of activities organized by the British Council to commemorate 2017 as ‘Year of Culture’ for India-UK relations. This year witnessed an enviable potpourri of cultural events and activities organized by the British Council with the aim to connect and inspire people to celebrate the long-standing relationship and vibrant cultural history.
