The last session of the Smart India Hackathon 2019-Software (SIH) was inaugurated by the Minister of Human Recourse Development in Jaipur, last week.
The event in which computer programmers and others involved in software development like graphic designers, interface designers and project managers collaborate is termed as Hackathon.
The Smart India Hackathon 2019 is a programme created to provide students an opportunity to exhibit and build digital solutions, to encourage a tradition of problem-solving and product innovation.
MHRD and the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) developed this programme.
As mentioned in a press release, 11,000 students registered in the Grand Finale, which was organised at 48 nodal centres in 42 cities.
28 teams are there and each of these consists of six students which is again guided by two professors. About 40,000 students participated in the first year and It is surprising to know that 19 solutions were obtained.
Essentially, the students are required to code non-stop for 36-hours, to find digital solutions for 350 problem statements. It is the world’s largest hackathon.
It is important for the students to code non-stop for 36-hours in order to find digital solutions for about 350 problem statements. It is probably the world’s largest Hackathon.
Whereas there were 17,400 entries last year from over 100,000 students. This year, the participation in the hackathon exceeded 200,000 this year; according to the press release, the number of people participating is doubling each year.
SIH had two sub-editions this year, 1st one is the Software edition which is a 36-hour software product development competition and the 2nd one is the Hardware edition which is again a five-day-long hardware product development competition.
Problem statements needed the finance receipting using RPA, development of invoice processing using RPA, a customer support chatbot and an alternative to traditional credential-based authentication among others.
The themes included this year were smart vehicles, smart communication, food technology, agriculture and rural development, healthcare and biomedical devices. Not just these but also renewable energy, robotics and drones, waste management and security and surveillance. The uses of technology even got explored in the tertiary sectors like hospitality, entertainment, financial services, tourism, and retail.
The ideas that were submitted were evaluated on the basic of the concept’s creativity, clarity, complexity and details in the prescribed format, practicability, feasibility, sustainability, the scale of impact, potential for future work progression and user experience.
It was at the Welingkar Institute of Management Development and Research, Mumbai where the Hackathon was held.
According to the Press Release SIH is a unique platform created to identify disruptive and new digital technology innovations so that challenges in India can be solved. This digital product development competition is a non-stop program where problems are presented before technology students in order to get innovative solutions.
In SIH 2019, Students received the opportunity to accept challenges faced by the private organisations, work on it and find solutions of some of the top companies in the world.
So far, two editions of SIH have been conducted successfully. The initial two editions of SIH in 2017 and 2018 respectively proved itself to be successful in promoting innovation and out-of-the-box thinking, especially in engineering students from across the country.
